Bruce Purdy serves as the Deputy Director for the HUBZone Program at the U.S. Small Business Administration, which helps small businesses in Historically Underutilized Business Zones gain access to federal procurement opportunities.

Purdy most recently served as the Deputy Associate Administrator for the Office of Small Business Development Centers, where he oversaw the $130 million Small Business Development Center Program. Prior to that, Purdy was the Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Office of Women’s Business Ownership, where he provided oversight of the SBA’s Women’s Business Center Program.

Purdy began his federal career with the SBA in 1997 as a Presidential Management Fellow, working in the Microenterprise Development Branch, then working on the SBA’s electronic lending solutions and risk management strategies for SBA loan programs.

Purdy served as the Acting Chief of the Microenterprise Development Branch in 2005-2006.
He took a leave of absence to participate in the Alfa Fellowship Program in Moscow, Russia, to focus on small and medium-sized enterprise development.

Upon returning from Russia, Purdy served as a senior program analyst in the Office of Entrepreneurial Development, working with the SBA’s entrepreneurial development programs, to analyze risk and program performance.

Purdy was one of four SBA staff members who participated in the Annenberg Fellowship Program. The program provides rising leaders the opportunity to learn management and leadership practices. The participants use lessons learned in the classroom and work with SBA leadership to develop innovative, actionable strategies and recommendations on the SBA’s Information Technology Acquisition Process.

Prior to his tenure in Washington, D.C., Purdy served in a dual role as president of the Williams County Economic Development Corp. in Ohio and as a community economic development agent for the Ohio State University Extension office. He also has worked as an advisor at a Procurement Technical Assistance Center in Toledo, Ohio.

Purdy holds a bachelor’s degree in Russian and international studies and a master’s degree in public administration, both from Bowling Green State University.
