Dr. Derrick O. Brown works at the United States’ (US) Small Business Administration (SBA), in his role as “Principal Sr. Business Analyst of the SBA Mentor-Protégé Program (SBAMPP).” Brown helps to build and champion the SBAMPP to create expanded opportunities to benefit small businesses in the federal government arena. Brown helped the program launch October 1, 2016, to increase the skills, capacities, and efficiencies of Protégé firms to team up with approved Mentors providing business development assistance.
Brown knows there are many approaches to business success, and by using the SBAMPP, many businesses could:
-Learn new and improved business practices
-Increase proficiency to compete for federal contracts successfully
-Improve relationships and communications
-Explore export fitness for international trade and contracts

Brown has an extensive background in business and economic development. He worked as a Program Analyst for SBA’s Historically Under-utilized Business Zone (HUBZone) program to help fuel small businesses operating and employing people in HUBZones. Before his federal service, he served as the Northern Virginia Bureau Chief for the Department of Minority Business Enterprise, now known as the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity. In that capacity, he advocated for Small, Women, and Minority-Owned businesses to facilitate capital solutions to fund business expansion and development. Brown helped companies achieve longevity and sustainability to create employment and build wealth. One of Dr. Brown’s passions is helping start-ups understand procurement, gaining access to capital, and the importance of business relationships.
Derrick Brown has a doctorate and master’s degree in business administration and an undergraduate degree in public administration. He is an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and serves as an officer for Virginia State University’s (VSU) Athletic Club since 2003 and is in the Hall/Wall of Fame for his college, VSU. In his spare time, he enjoys coaching baseball, softball, playing golf, as well as spending time with his family.
